Delirium is the most common manifestation of acute brain dysfunction during critical illness, affecting 50 to 75% of patients who receive mechanical ventilation in an intensive care unit (ICU). Patients with delirium have higher mortality, longer periods of mechanical ventilation and hospital stays, higher costs, and a higher risk of long-term cognitive impairment9-11 than patients who do not have delirium.
